Answer:
Zaheer,
Linux is a UNIX like operating system which shares many of the same application programming interfaces. For more details check out this link [1], under section 1.8.4 which describes some of the differences between between Linux and Unix.
A number of programming languages are available for Linux include: C/C++, Java, Perl, PHP, Python, Ruby, just to name a few.
Regarding what makes Linux better then Windows, "better" is a subjective term, which implies different qualities to different people.
I personally prefer Linux because it:
* is free, not just in terms of cost but the source code for Linux is available for all to look at and modify and build on.
* offers a powerful and flexible computing environment, appropriate for running on everything from a desktop workstation, a laptop, a network server (e.g. firewall, web server, file/print server) and even in embedded devices (e.g. PDA, cell phones, etc.)
* builds on the legacy of Unix in terms of solid performance and security
* offerings thousands of applications (which like Linux are free as well) from word processes to web servers.
* can be completely customized for all most any purpose, down to the kernel level.
As far as Red Hat Linux goes, Red Hat has always been a good distribution in my opinion  but they have stopped producing their free offering Red Hat Linux as version nine. Currently Red Hat only offers their commercial product Red Hat Enterprise Linux which is far from free. Red Hat did spin of a project called Fedora Linux [2] which is a community sponsored project in which Red Hat plays a very big roll. If you like Red Hat Linux, I recommend checking out Fedora.
If you are going to dive into Linux I recommend the book "How Linux Works: What Every Superuser Should Know" [3]. You will find two sample chapters on the link provided, well worth your time to read.
