1. How do we compare Veritas’ NetBackup GUI versus the new TSM 5.3 Administrator Center?
The Veritas NetBackup Admin GUI is not a web-based interface, so an administrator is limited in means of access to the NetBackup servers. NetBackup supports a remote GUI to assist in backups and restores, otherwise, an additional product, such as Global Data Manager, must be obtained to administer a large environment involving multiple servers.
2. Is TSM competitive against Veritas NetBackup?
YES! TSM has a better ROI than Veritas and is more than a backup/recovery/archive utility. We have released a benchmark analysis that details this information. TSM 5.3 performs backups 51% faster, restores 87% faster, uses 44% less disk and ¼ the number of tapes during backups. Additionally, TSM continues to deliver a data management architecture that can be used for customers’ enterprises and leverages key data management capabilities such as IBM Data Management Content Management.
3. I understand that TSM has been a better product compared to Veritas NetBackup, but what did we do in TSM 5.3 to improve this lead?
As mentioned above, TSM 5.3 delivers huge performance improvements on throughput that will be noticed by most users and in particular those using a large number of small files. In addition, the new Admin Center makes TSM 5.3 more intuitive to use for the neophyte user or casual user. A new capability called Health Monitor shows the status of scheduled events, database and recovery log, storage devices and activity log messages.
4. My customer is telling me that TSM uses an out-dated database versus Veritas NetBackup. Is this true?
Not at all! TSM uses a relational data base whereas Veritas NetBackup uses a flat file. By using a relational database, TSM delivers progressive backups, managed archiving, integrated disaster recovery planning, hierarchical data migration, flexible policies and as mentioned above, better disk and tape utilization. Alternatively, Veritas NetBackup doesn’t have a true archive capability, has no disaster recovery planning, no hierarchical data movement and inflexible policies.
5. Is Veritas new Synthetic backup better than TSM’s progressive capabilities?
No! TSM’s progressive function provides customers better ROI by running faster backups, faster restores, better archiving and better utilization of tape and disk. Veritas’ synthetic backup combines their traditional incremental backups with a full backup. This means an additional full back up is required on a period basis in order to create a synthetic backup.
